I hitchhiked home in the transfer car after a Hong By Starlight trip. My guest was pleasant and well traveled. We reached my Soi and he shook my hand.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you very much for your assistance with my son and Kristina with the Hongs by starlight tour. They have not stop talking about the tour. It was “the most interesting tour” they did during their stay in Phuket and Bangkok. My Personal Account Of The Sea Canoe Kayaking Excursion In Phuket Thailand Which Explores The Caves

As the anchor slid into the Andaman Sea, a hush of anticipation descended on the boat. Here we were, a dozen or so tourists, dwarfed by the limestone karsts that punctuate the seascape between Phuket Island and Krabi on Thailand's southern shore, looking forward to our adventure.

I for one did not really know what to expect as the crew unloaded the bright yellow kayaks. Will I have to paddle? Will I be able to find my way in the dark caves?

My questions were soon answered as the head guide gave the briefing. Once we had put on our life vests, he explained, we would pair-up and join one of the guides waiting in their kayaks which by now had spread out around the boat like ducklings around their mother.

Stepping gingerly onto my allotted kayak, I grinned nervously at my guide who beamed a typical Thai smile. If you know Thailand you will know what I mean: the type of smile that can be seen from space. Our guide, 'Nit' was his name, paddled us effortlessly away from the mother ship and closer to the, by now, imposing cliffs of the island, the first of many we would be getting to know intimately that day.

This excursion was pioneered by an American John 'Caveman' Gray. It was in 1989 that John discovered the 'hongs' of Phang Nga Bay in Thailand: the Thai word 'hong' means room and it refers to the open area inside these limestone islands. If you can imagine that some of these islands in Phang Nga Bay are shaped like donuts, the type with a hole in the middle. John discovered that at low tide it is possible to follow a network of caves through the limestone rock into an inner world.

In that same year John set-up his company, Sea Canoe; and so successful was his concept that he spawned many copycat companies including more than a few Sea Canoes. To avoid confusion John has re-named his company John Gray's Sea Canoe.

'Nit' explained in his very good English that at certain points on our journey through the caves we would have to lie flat on our backs because of the low ceilings. You can imagine at this point I was beginning to question the sanity of my decision to drag myself out of bed early that morning simply to put myself in mortal danger. At the same time I was trying to work out which way the tide was running. If these caves were only accessible at low tide, how much time did we have to get in and out before the tide turned?

"And when you get inside", Nit's voice interrupted my thoughts, "to protect the environment, there is no talking and no smoking". Excellent, now I remembered why I was risking life and limb. It was this idea of visiting a pristine environment that had first attracted me.

The caves were becoming narrower now as Nit manoeuvred our kayak through the dark. "Lie down" he whispered as his torchlight captured a low hanging rock. The ceiling of the cave was getting closer to my face and I had to turn my head to prevent my nose scraping along the sharp limestone. This was actually getting exciting although I wasn't sure how long I could cope with this claustrophobic feeling that was starting to creep over me.

But within minutes the cave started to open up again and a hint of daylight caressed the cavern wall.

I squinted as we emerged into the bright sunlight, into a land that time forgot. Trees were clinging to the steep scrub-covered walls of the 'hong' and reaching out for the brilliant blue sky above. A sea eagle swooped down low to see who these interlopers were. And all was peace and tranquillity.

The family of kayaks paddled slowly through the hong, the occupants in awe of this magical, secret place in southern Thailand. The only sounds were the lapping of water, the call of the cicadas, the clicking of cameras and whispers of excitement.

All too soon it was time to head back. John Gray's professional guides were well aware of the movement of the tides and making sure we were through those caves in good time.

The excitement only increased with each 'hong' we explored and the memories of that day will never leave me.

We had heard so much about this place, and wanted to do iti the best possible way, i got it with john grays sea canoe, not only did i found out they were the first the starlight trip was amazing other people who had done other trips, moaned about overcrowding we had none. The trip is hard to describe, we left hotel at a decent 11 am (most other trips we did left 7am) left and went kayaking in the amazing Phang Nga bay our guide paddled us through some of the most amazing scenery I have ever seen and took us amongst some wicked wildlife. We had a great dinner buffet that we never found any better in thailand (and they have the best food in the world) then we went out for a night paddle and what an experience. very hard to describe just do it the starlight trip with john grays sea canoe.

With 25 inches of snow here in Denver, our mezmerizing Twilight trip with you and "The Boys" last Friday seems now like a distant fantasy. A heartfelt thanks for creating such an inspirational, almost spiritual, life shaping memory.

We spoke some on the boat about your old surf'n days and carpool buddies, many of whom I'm sure were featured in the recent, respectful documentary called "Riding the Giants." I'm rounding up a DVD copy to wing your way as a symbol of thanks for an incredible experience. Call it a belated Xmas present if you like.

I was deeply moved by emotional Thai ride you've been on since '89 from awestruck discovery of the nature's magnificent cave creations to heartfelt sharing of natural beauty with fellow explorers to mentoring locals in eco respect (and the 200 meter crawl). All this gratifying accomplishment only to witness the parade of less caring copy cats choke the wonderous caves and coves int pursuit of greenbacks. Sea canoes transformed into yellow bullets with Mother Nature herself the bullseye target.

I'm new to Thailand and Thai ways (2nd 3 week visit in a year) but know within my heart that more can and must be done to reach "the powers that be" with the right message in the right way. At the Flora Expo in Chiang Mai, several exhibits touted the many environmental programs embraced by the King and the Royal Family. Despite the challenge of bucking economic interests in sea kayak tourism, my bones tell me your voice can and will be heard. Perhaps I can help somehow.

While the Princess has toured with you since 1993, it appears that she has experienced only the serene, unspoiled beauty sheltered from the sobering reality of babbling teens, monkey feeding voyeurs and naive if not disrespectful "guides." I came to appreciate your torment and motivation to "cut bait and bail" but John, something tells me this place isn't done with you yet. I know you as a creative doer, and there's LOTS more to be done before you move on to just rewards in fresh, pristine waters.

I hope the spirit of my message reaches you in place that makes a difference in your resolve. I hope to return in late February or March and would love to meet with you to learn more of what you've already tried to do and where things fell down. I'm coming up on retirement soon myself and would relish a challenge of merit to sink my teeth into.

I recently (last Saturday) went on the Hong by Starlight tour and felt compelled to congratulate you and all your staff on the excellent time that was had by myself and my three friends. It was well organised, from the pick up at the hotel (with the guide apologising for being 10 minutes late, this would not happen in Australia) to the final farewell with the staff lined up along the steps at the wharf, we were made to feel as though we were special. The food was fantastic - we were amazed at how the ladies in the kitchen below deck could serve up such fresh food (and kept hot) from such a small kitchen area! The guides that we had paddling for us (Suman, and Wan - spelling is probably incorrect I'm sorry) were very accommodating and Suman's knowledge and grasp of English for someone who is not formally educated was outstanding. We were amazed at some of the facts he shared with us and is now known by myself and my friends as the Thai encyclopedia! Unfortunately the weather was against us at the end of the evening and we encountered a heavy shower very soon after dinner, as we were sitting at the back of the boat we had to stand in the area where the table was. In what seems like true form of the staff on board the boat we were offered the area behind the Captain to sit in during the return trip to the wharf. During this time we were delighted to have a truly enlightening conversation with a member of your crew - we were very remiss in not asking him his name, however he is married and has one child with another due shortly. Please pass on our thanks to all of the crew who made this day out the highlight of our visit to Phuket!

Just to let you know we had a fantastic time sea canoeing in Thailand! The Hong By Starlight trip was without doubt a highlight of our holiday. Our guide, Suman, was superb - my son called him Captain Jack due his uncanny resemblance to Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean! He told us all about the wildlife and the area.

As our son sent our kratong floating off across the moonlit sea, he said his wish was that we would come back to Thailand - and somehow I think we might just do that!

Wow, I've done some cool things in my life but this was one the coolest.

John Gray and his staff have put together a day of sea, flora and fauna but at the same time they didn't forget I was on vacation, it was very relaxing. The staff was well informed about natural history and Thai customs, they were humorous and put everyone at ease and yet made us feel safe. The authentic Thai cuisine was the best.

Living close to Missouri, we canoe and kayak quite frequently and just love it. Your staff were all so pleasant, helpful and kind. My husband and I did the Hong by Starlight trip on Saturday, Oct 28. We had a fabulous time! Nu was our guide and did an excellent job. Hello John, We are home now (California, US). We wanted to write and let you know that we absolutely LOVED the SeaCanoe tour. Our paddler was Kew and he was great. We were very happy he was our guide, we feel as though we got the best guide of the bunch and he made the trip PERFECT for us. Please let Kew know he is very appreciated.

Your day trip was the highlight of our entire 2.5 weeks in Thailand. The food on the boat was delicious (better than most of the restaurants we ate at) and there was plenty for my wife to eat even with her limited diet. Just back from Thailand and Hong Kong and WOW!

As promised, here is my review of the John Gray Sea Canoe - GO! GO! GO!

We went on the Starlight tour and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The guides were excellent - fun and extremely knowledgeable. I was impressed at their concern about the environment to the point of picking up garbage left by other tour groups ahead of us.

There were two meals included and the food was excellent and plentiful. They had a great supply of soft drinks, water, tea and coffee with fruit snack as well.

Scenery was phenomenal and at no time were we rushed. We had lots of time to soak in the surroundings and found the sights to be beautiful, serene and tranquil. We had the wonderful opportunity to observe from very close up about 14 Macaque monkeys in their natural habitat.

If I am in the area again, I will definitely do this tour a second time.

Hi John, Friends of ours, Alan and Cheryl, older (early 60's) had a not so pleasant trip a few days later - they said their guide was a "skinny XXXXXX" who showed little interest in anyone and was not informative - I think they must not have been on the tour with you and booked the wrong tour.

(That's correct, Patrick - It's a company that "uses your name and reputation to lower our quality and make a lot of money".  Their guides even have to bring their own lunch, usually in a Styrofoam box that we eventually clean up from the sea!)

BEST RESTAURANT OFF PHUKET

WOW!!  The crew was fabulous, the food thanks to the unnamed and not introduced cooks was the best Thai food I've eaten, and the crew was professional ad interesting.  This tour was one of the best I've taken.  Magical.  My only comment would be to include women - even if it is only to introduce the cooks!  Oct. 11, 2004 (rainy)  (John - Our policy is to introduce the cooks every trip, but they are very shy and don't like to take a bow, Thank you for this comment because I can show them how important the guests think they are.  I strongly believe in Women's Equality and only wish that Thai pooying could also be paddle guides!)

It's really amazing!  How can we go through a small cave with such a big canoe?  The guide and our canoe driver go out of this world with their paddling skills!   The wonderful supply of fresh fruits and snacks are another credit.  Every time we came back from the caves a plate of fresh fruits are available for everybody.  I also love to have the Thai food for dinner.  Fantastic!  It's tailor-made to suit anyone.  The staff were fun and very knowledgeable.  So everyone will find they get a plate of your favorite dinner!!!   Thank you very much for your nice arrangements.  What a fantastic and memorable trip!!!

Since yesterday we are back in Switzerland, where the snow has finally come ... the sky is gray and the temperature 6°C .... but our thoughts and our feelings are still in Thailand, where we spend fantastic holiday ... one third "dolce far niente", one third scuba diving and one third hongs and lagunes with Pong, Kate, Bill and a outstanding "chef de cuisine" named Ae.

As you know, my wife and I made almost the same trip with your organization thirteen years ago; We where very curious ( maybe also a bit worried) to see how the region has developed in the meantime. Pong an its crew managed to give to us the impression that we were alone in an almost still untouched nature ... they are not only very professional, but at the same time extremely passionate, warm-hearted, courteous and sensitive ... we had a great time with them. A real fun trip and despite the rain it was fantastic.  The rain actually created a bit of fun activities as the guides would take the kids through the waterfalls under the tidal overhang.  The starlight hong with the floating candles, fluorescent plankton and fireflies was very relaxing and a thoroughly enjoyable way to end a memorable day.  FANTASTIC!!

It's really amazing!  How can we go through a small cave with such a big canoe?  The guide and our canoe driver go out of this world with their paddling skills!   The wonderful supply of fresh fruits and snacks are another credit.  Every time we came back from the caves a plate of fresh fruits are available for everybody.

I also love to have the Thai food for dinner.  Fantastic!  It's tailor-made to suit anyone.  The staff were fun and very knowledgeable.  So everyone will find they get a plate of your favorite dinner!!!   Thank you very much for your nice arrangements.  What a fantastic and memorable trip!!!

The whole day was a fascinating and memorable experience.  The excellent guide provided us with masses of information and lots of laughter and enjoyment.  The whole trip was an experience to remember.  It was like entering a whole new world, so different from anything we have ever experienced before!  We can't fault a thing - fro, the excellent food to the friendly staff!  It is a day I'm sure we will never forget.
