Moloka'i and O' Ahu,
Hawai'i - August Trip
I never had a camera during my Moloka'i days,
but the 1985 Emmy Award-winning "Moloka'i's Forgotten Frontier" provided the
world with Mike May's wonderful Beta-cam images. Now with the internet, I
wanted to offer you a website show so I chased down Dr, Lloyd Lewis for his
1988 Moloka'i slides. Lloyd is an excellent photographer, but the slides are
old, so remember this is an archival work. I mixed in shots from my 1994
honeymoon "Hurricane John" trip with Amporn the fill in some of the vistas
and tease you to reading the story at

complete
with many more photos than appear below.
I ran Koolau Moloka'i 78 times. Typical conditions are 15-25 knot tradewinds
with 4-6 foot whitecap seas. About one trip in a season went to a hairy 8-10
20-30 knot winds. Thanks to the inflatables, we ran commercial trips and
never had an accident, even with that final rock beach landing.
Lloyd's trip was one of the calmest ever, but with the legendary "Moloka'i
Express", it's one of the world's most treacherous warm-water coastlines -
and one of the most beautiful. Finally, you can enjoy!
