To My Dear Children and Youth of Puerto Princessa:
Every year we celebrate the tree-planting festival Pista Y Ang Kageban. This
is because we care about our environment, especially our forests.
Pista Y Ang Kageban, the book, is for you. The story is told by a child like
you who participated in the tree-planting festival and enjoyed it very much.
I hope that you will also come and help us plant more trees this year when
the rains start in June.
Pista Y Ang Kageban is about how we in Puerto Princessa unite to take care
of our environment. In a real way, this is about taking care of ourselves
today and our love one's who would come after us. Someday, when you grow up,
you will understand these things more.
In the meantime, get ready with your seedlings. Let's celebrate Pista Y Ang

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
 A native of Palawan, a Baha'i, Jane Timbancaya-Urbanek, for the past 20
years has been involved with development communications and environmental
education via radio broadcasts, community dialogues, musical plays,
songwriting contests, and community mobilization projects like the now
popular city-wide tree-planting festival, Pista Y Ang Kageban (Festival of
the Forest) and province-wide Pista Ng Kalikasan (Nature's Festival).
PISTA Y AnG KAGEBAN , the book, is a documentation of the tree-planting
festival through the eyes of a child. With this book Ms. Urbanek hopes to be
able to plant the seeds of love for Nature in the hearts of children.
Ms. Urbanek lives in Palawan Islands, Philippines with her family. An
advocate of world peace, she believes that the true well-being of man and
the earth can be attained if people unite and work together using a viable
formula.
ABOUT THE illustrator:
 Beth Parrocha-Doctolero is an artist and a mother to 4-year old Uriel. A
graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, she
enjoys doing anything related to her craft, that of an illustrator and a
graphic designer.
For PISTA Y AnG KAGEBAN , the book, she went to Palawan to "smell the earth,
the forest, the waves, the sand" before she immersed herself in the
drawings. She confesses that this is the first time she had to draw so many
people and forest for a book.
To date, Beth has illustrated more than 15 books. She is a recipient of a
National Best book Design Award for the book Philippine Picture Postcards
and a Gintong Aklat Award for Fruits of the Philippines. |
