Water temples dominate John Gray’s SeaCanoe Vietnam trips. The Ba Men fishing temple is Dao Da Be’s last stop before the open seas, and local fishermen bring offerings for safe keeping of their forays into the South China Sea. Ninh Binh is a spectacular lake and limestone mountain landscape with several water temples. See it fast. This stunning land is currently going under the wrecking ball of mass tourism thanks to a ridiculously stupid and irresponsible major infrastructure project, including a four-lane tunnel highway through a limestone mountain to a land filled lake that will host what is being billed as “South-East Asia’s Largest Pagoda”, concrete of course.
The Ninh Binh habitat is a World treasure that should be automatic World Heritage. There should no be an infrastructure in the marvelous mountain lakes and caves, but the small water temple built across the lake from the monstrous Pagoda and tour bus parking lot actually fits well into the landscape – for now at least. The temple today is tranquil and unique. We paddle through 12 caves to get there and across the lake to this beautiful new temple. After enjoying the stunning habitat (with your back to the heavy construction) you paddle out through a notch in the rocks.
