Halawa Overview
Halawa Overview
Location: Halawa Valley, Moloka'i, Hawai'i
Lloyd's group stops at the Halawa lookout to take in their first glimpse of Koolau Moloka'i. Halawa Valley was an early yet major Hawaiian settlement, but susceptible to Tsunami’s that funneled into the valley. Hawaiians abandoned the settlement going into the 20th century, but the Renaissance started in the late 70's generated a resurgence of settlement and protection of the archaeology in the back of the valley. When I left Hawai'i, Halawa Falls trail was closed to prevent damage to the Hawaiian sites. Hawaiians were not stupid – they lived close to the Falls, down the valley just enough to avoid flash floods. Photo Copyright to Lloyd Lewis, Ph.D
