| Once we passed from the lee of Haka’a’ano Point, the hurricane driven swells went back to 10 meters, I knew the camera lens flattens the waves, but I wanted to get a shot that shows the real size of these monsters. To drop the paddle, turn around, and take a shot from behind was very risky business. If the kayak went sideways when I had a camera in my hands instead of the paddle, we might logroll and capsize – a life-threatening situation.
I went for it – took several swells to set up the camera, then dropped the paddle, popped off a frame and grabbed the paddle back in a matter of seconds. I got my shot, but cut out the bottom half of the wave. At least you “get the picture”, the only good big wave shot I got of the entire trip. |
