| Exploring Vanua Balavu, 1998
Vanua Balavu was only recently open to outsiders since 1998. We were the first one allowed in, and I explored Vanua Balavu in 1997.
Marine limestone and only 60 miles from volcanic Taveuni, the different climates are startling. Taveuni is teeming with water, gushes from everywhere in the lush jungles.
Vanua Balavu is dry; rain just pours through the limestone and never stops. There's no water for drinking or bathing, Even so, Nunganila Bay is spectacular. Although the coral is bleached, there are untouched gardens nearby.
