| Back up the coast, we attended a Valentines Day overnight mangrove planting festival called “Love Affair With Nature”. During planting I noticed this beautiful Bruguiera with its perfect set of pneumatophores. In all my years in Thailand and Vietnam, I’ve never seen such a set of these vital air-breathing roots that are literally the lungs of this important mangrove pioneer species. Thick, expansive and untouched, this root system is a masterpiece.
In the hongs of Phang Nga, unaware sea canoe guides paddle right over these roots or walk on them, Consequently only two sickly specimens remain in just one Hong, one with only three pneumatophores and the other with just a couple of dozen.
