| In more reasonable seas than Hurricane John, Tino, our lead guide in Taveuni, paddles the cargo kayaks down the magical backside. Even in calm seas, the1-2 meter surf dumps right onto coral reefs fronting the beaches – a guaranteed problem in anything but inflatables.
I once took an experienced white water kayaker down this coastline when the surf was running only one meter. He laughed when I called the coastline “treacherous” only because he had no experience with open ocean coastlines. Any time you underestimate the sea, you are asking for trouble. Always avoid cocky or flippant guides – they are guaranteed dangerous.
