Mo'o Habitat
Mo'o Habitat
Location: Papalaua Falls, Koolau Moloka'i, Hawai'i
Traversing the boulder streambed for 2K is challenging, but this swimming hole is the worthwhile goal. Reputedly populated by Mo'o, Hawaiians believed that innocents who swam here were potential lizard lunch. The pool is too deep to free dive, so who knows if there really are Mo'o or not? It's always a strange feeling swimming across the pool — against the current and under the falls, wondering if giant lizards capable of assuming any form would rush from the depths and take you to oblivion. The reward for this risky behavior is pounding your head under a high volume of water dropping a long, long way. Heavy already, water hits really, really hard.
