Satun Highlands Waterfall
Satun Highlands Waterfall
Location: Highlands, Satun, Thailand
Limestone waterfalls are in a league of their own. Calcite-saturated waters develop layers of flowstone cushions spilling curtains of water. Each layer has its own pool, never deep, but the flowstone can be quite slippery. We advise slow going on all fours. The source is a simple hole in the ground at the top of the falls, the nozzle of a natural fire hose. These water passages, called swallets, mimic the holes in hard Swiss cheese. This swallet bursts to the surface as a small five-meter pool fronting the springs. We’ve been ten meters into the water-filled cave swimming underwater against the strong current, but the water tube is absent of air pockets and just leads into total darkness, common in limestone structures.
