Claudio McGuide Paddles Haloku
Claudio McGuide Paddles Haloku
Location: Haloku, Koolau Moloka'i, Hawai'i
Claudio passes the base of Haloku, allowing a perspective on this truly massive lava structure. The top of the frame is about 25% of cliffs, which extend into the tradewind clouds at the standard 3,000-foot elevation. In 78 trips, we saw the top of the cliffs only four times. Awesome is the keyword here — The Moloka'i Express current exudes an unmistakable and ever present power, the cliffs make you feel like an ant in the middle of the Sahara, and there are no landings in case of emergency. The washing machine currents bouncing off points framing Pelekunu Valley back into the Moloka’i Express mainstream are among the World's most confused open ocean waters, and Haloku is where you determine your course for safe passage, so it's definitely time to be on your game. This trip is so calm that Claudio paddles fairly close to shore. On many trips, we paddle up to three kilometers off shore on the fringes of the swirling waters.
