| Mudskippers are the "Evolution Fish". Without them, none of us would be here – along with all land-based or airborne vertebrates. When I was seven or eight, I had the California cousin of the mudskipper, a Gobi, as occasional visitor in our Newport Beach house. Whatever Gobi I collected from a tide pool spent the night and returned to the same tide pool the next day. Mudskippers, and many Gobi species, are highly intelligent and carry on colorful conversations for fish. Their eye contact is an unmistakable sign of intelligence.
