| Location: Halawa Bay, Moloka'i, Hawai'i |
| Shot from the lookout 500 meters up, Halawa looks calm – and this time it is. It will be an incident-free and safe trip, but without following tradewinds and sea, it’s a long paddle.
We stage our expedition from the far end of the beach inside the cove. Plenty of space, no bothers, and the cove makes a good place to learn how the kayak handles. After everybody’s packed and paddling, we exit straight out the mouth and on up the channel. The trades are usually blowing from the right, so to clear Halawa Point safely; we go far into deep water before turning up the coast.
