Outside The Pelekunu Rocks
Outside The Pelekunu Rocks
Location: Pelekunu, Koolau Moloka'i, Hawai'i
The rougher it is, the further offshore you must paddle from the Pelekunu washing machine. On the Hurricane John trip, we passed outside these rocks. Even in blue water, the swells were running 10 meters. Out in deep, unobstructed water, there is frequency and rhythm to the sea, but there is no form or frequency “inside” where the current bounces off the headlands back into the mainstream current. Bouncing like a cork, our inflatables are the most seaworthy vehicles in these seas, but it would be foolhardy navigating any vessel closer to shore. The sharp peak is Ha’upu, 1,022 feet above sea level. From our friends’ house, one can climb to the top in an hour, and stand with your feet on the edge if the precipice, looking straight down at the waves breaking on the rocks – a BASE jumpers dream! The peak was first formed by turtles uplifting the sharp rock out of the sea, and later as the result of a war after Ka’pe’e’ka’uila, the Demigod of Ha’upu abducted the beautiful Demigod Hina, and her two brothers Kana and Niheu rescued her after a battles that stretched the mountain and changed its shape.
