| Don't bring your hammer, the sparkles aren't really diamonds.
This wide shot of World Class is still missing the top half of the stalactite. Stalactites are made by water dripping down through the island, dissolving the calcium carbonate (former coral) and suspending the molecules in the water in a process called 'percolation', just like the water passing through your coffee grounds. It takes a lot of water to make a stalactite the size of 'World Class', and you can see where that water ate out the shelf separating the upper (dry) and lower (wet) caves. Here, it's just a hole big enough for the stalactite to grow. In the Bat Cave, water ate away the entire shelf. |
