| Halong Bay sometimes gets as cold as 15C or 70F in winter, but it's still warm enough to sustain coral. The filter-feeding polyps love to grow in entrance channels, as these Minnesota paddlers discovered.
Coral selling is a big threat to Halong coral. It’s against the law, but authorities are lax. Never buy coral — responsible countries won't allow it through customs anyway. If you see anybody buying or selling coral, report the crime to this website once you return to Hanoi. (see slide show "Environmental Criminals".) |
