| Location: Cat Ba Island, Ha Long Bay, Vietnam |
| People often ask what its like on top of the islands. Can we climb over the top? Our answer is always "No, it's like a pincushion up there." This shot is from a trek to the interior of Cat Ba Island. The pincushion spire effect comes from rainfall erosion called fluting, which leave the pincushion effect when the vertical drain patterns intersect.
Far too sharp and dangerous to traverse, fluting is difficult to photograph unless there is a train nearby. Even so, this telephoto shot was across a chasm from the actual rocks.
