Ha'upu Bay In Hurricane John
Ha'upu Bay In Hurricane John
Location: Ha'upu Bay, Koolau Moloka'i, Hawai'i
Ha'upu may be protected by it’s long point, but that was meaningless during the Hurricane John trip, Swells beat into the Bay while Wai'mea (red water) comes piling out of Wai'oho'o'kalo Valley, (Water that makes the taro grow) . Formed by a steeply sloped 4,000-foot peak with steep angular valley walls, Wai'oho'o'kalo stream runs downhill fast, and then exits at a waterfall beach. A classic flash flood drainage system, most Hawai’i residents know that when the waters turn brown, expect a flood. In this shot, the muddy flash flood meets the oncoming swells to make a mess of Ha'upu. I worried that after this long and dangerous journey, we wouldn't get into the caves on the next day.
