| Location: Needle Cave, Ha'upu Bay, Moloka'i, Hawai'i, USA |
| Amporn explored Ha'upu Bay's Needle Cave on Koolau Moloka'i during our 1994 Hurricane John Honeymoon paddle. Ironically, with the hurricane to the southwest by Day 4, Ha'upu was sheltered enough to allow us entry.
Tidal Technology started at the Needle Cave. The low-lying cave submerges at high tide. On choppy days, waves funnel through the cave’s wide mouth into the narrow needle chamber, turning six-inch ripples into six-foot swells that toss you against the lava ceiling. The back of the cave is a narrow 50-meter shaft formed by two vertical walls under a (thankfully) high ceiling. The final chamber widens into a sloped pebble beach formed by crashing surf. It's a strange, tight place of darkness and unusual roaring sounds, intensified when a wave comes roaring down the “needle”.
This is not a place for the faint-hearted
