| In 1992, the road to Halong was rice all the way. Four major bridges were out and rudimentary "ferries" created bottlenecks with waits of one to three hours. There was nothing to do but look at rice. (see "Early Explorations" slide dhow).
Today the drive to Halong is three hours on a modern highway with modern bridges. It's still rice fields all the way.
Notice the soccer goal crossbar to the right of the water buffalo.
