Location: Kathu, Phuket, Thailand
From this photo it’s easy to imagine the secret to colugo durability. Consider gliding 100 meters to a treetop you may or may not secure, bending branches to break your flight, and often falling through the jungle canopy, or missing it completely. It’s a long way to the ground, but before the hit, you curl you light body into a round ball of fur and bounce until coming to rest. Sounds tough, but colugos are built to assume the pre-natal position and let their thick fur coat absorb the energy.
